Roundbox Media

Samples of projects and authoring during my time with Roundbox Media. page.

i-Know

Date: November, 2003
Description: The i-Know application, created for McGraw-Hill's CTB division, was an on-going project for Roundbox since the company's inception and continued after my tenure. A desktop assessment application, i-Know utilized SWFStudio's functionality to make secure HTTP connections to McGraw-Hill assessment servers and allowed students to take tests in a kiosk-like atmosphere.

Since starting with the company in April of 2003 I had numerous opportunities to work on the application, making bug fixes and extending functionality.

TransMontaigne

Date: November, 2003
Description: Roundbox Media was retained to do the server-side programming for the corporate web site for Denver-based TransMontaigne Corporation. Utilizing Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks, the site went through several re-designs before the final version (live here) was settled upon.

Another aspect of the site that bears mentioning is the dynamic facilities map that was created. Powered by external data, the map shows the locations of the company's assets from Colorado, all the way to the eastern seaboard. An older version of the application is available here.

CTB FileView

Date: November, 2003
Description: Created for the CTB division of McGraw-Hill, this is a small CD-based application created in Flash and utilizing SWFStudio. The application, when started, scans an XML file and documents folder, displaying file information and allowing the User to open files based on descriptions.

SWFStudio allows Flash to scan directories, and open files using their native applications.

Student Success

Date: November, 2003
Description: Created for the Dushkin division of McGraw-Hill, this small .swf file is a short introduction to their Student Success web site, and affords some limited navigational functionality.

Flyout XML Menu

Date: August, 2003
Description: In working with an extant program, the example available here allowed for built-in randomization of topics, as well as allowing for display of the XML working behind the scenes.

Color Transforms

Date: July, 2003
Description: Two separate proofs of concept for a potential customer demonstrating the application of color transformations to artwork. One done in Flash using the color object, the other Director using get() and setPixel().

Pharmedica Communications

Pharmedica Communications, LLC, formerly located in Essex, Connecticut, provided Continuing Medical Education (CME) software and marketing materials to various pharmaceutical companies, as well as offered printing and meetings & planning services. I was a multimedia engineer for them, working primarily in Director and Flash, from May, 2002 until April, 2003.

Avelox Overview CD-ROM

Description: Part of a three-disc series, the Avelox projects were all authored using Macromedia Director.

Avelox Self-Paced CD-ROM

Description: A CD-ROM that allowed doctors to study materials, review case studies, and take a CME certified test at home or in the office.

Avelox Peer-2-Peer

Description: The Peer-2-Peer CD is geared to facilitate doctors talking to one another about treatment options.

Remicade Topic 3

Description: A duel-purpose Director-based CD-ROM for diagnosis and treatment of both Rheumatoid Arthritis and IBD.

DxTx

Description: DxTx (since renamed), was a new marketing technique developed by Pharmedica for pharmaceutical sales representatives. Utilizing tablet PCs, the sales reps utilized Shockwave and Flash formatted presentations to grab the attention of their target audiences: doctors. With time being of the essence for the representatives (a remarkably low percentage actually get "face time" with doctors), they were searching for something that was captivating but also informative.

By taking current advertising materials, animating them, and adding clinical data, the representatives saw a positive increase in their success rates with doctors.

While at Pharmedica I was involved marginally with the product, creating animated sequences and some scripted routines.

PAO/DVT Slide Player

Description: Utilizing PowerPoint slides exported as WMF files, in turn imported into Flash, the Peer-2-Peer project incorporated recorded audio of Doctor's lectures for the purposes of Continuing Medical Education.

Relpax

Description: The first project I undertook at Pharmedica, this Director-based CD-ROM it would last me off and on straight through until mid-January of 2003, when I traveled to Phoenix for one of the first launch meetings for this speaker training aide.

The application had existed previously to my coming in staff at Pharmedica, but due to contractual obligations, the company no longer had the source code. In addition to bug fixes and data updating, a ground-up redesign also came into being.

McGraw-Hill

SRA Phonics, Grade 1-3

Description: SRA Phonics was the first project I undertook while with McGraw-Hill, and it lasted through four version releases while I was with the company, each with updated content.

The project was sprawling—three grades plus kindergarten—each with between twelve and twenty books in it. The application uses phonics to teach and reinforce reading in young children.

The McGraw-Hill Learning Store

The McGraw-Hill Learning Store is the company's online PHP-driven resource for purchasing learning materials. For my part, working with a team of two other developers, we programmed the customer service interface, linking web pages to online databases via PHP and MySQL. The interface allowed CSRs to access and manipulate customer data and check on customer's order status.

The Learning Network : Question the Answers

The McGraw-Hill Learning Network was a major initiative that our division worked on during the year 2000.

While I'm not certain if the content still exists, our group was tasked with the creation of several Director- and Flash-based online multi-player games utilizing java servlets. The game that I spent the majority of my time on was called Question the Answers and was a Jeopary-styled quiz game. It allowed as many as three students to take part in a game with content being driven by parameters set during log-in. Topics ranged from Astronomy to Mathematics

Science Explorations 12 & 13

Part of a large, multi-disc set, the two examples were Director-based renditions of scientific experiments.

The two experiments are available in the multimedia section under the Director headline.

Distance Learning Development (Blackboard and WebCT)

McGraw-Hill offers formatted content in support of the Blackboard, WebCT, and PageOut Learning Management Systems. Our team was tasked with the creation of several online modules for the system, involving heavy HTML coding.

Math Demo

An early project, this demo was a re-creation of an existing title. Originally written in C++, the company was interested in taking the product online, and I created a Shockwave version of the application.

While it may not look like much, the management in charge loved it, because it was indistinguishable from the original older app, which they apparently were quite fond of.

Funnybone Interactive

Funnybone Interactive was located in near the green in Canton, Connecticut. The company, acquired by CUC (which became Cendant Corporation), was sold to Vivendi International. Vivendi has since pulled the plug on the company, and it shut its doors back in the spring of 2003.

Fisher-Price Ranger Trail

My last title with Funnybone, I was responsible for the GUI and the River Race game.

While I haven't a copy of it, apparently it (and several of the other titles listed below) are available here.

Fisher-Price Time to Play Pet Shop

A Director-based product, Pet Shop was my first project as lead programmer.

Fisher-Price Time to Play Dollhouse

Responsibilities include programming of one of the activities of Dollhouse.

Fisher-Price Castle

The first programming assignment I was given: a sing-along section of the Castles CD-ROM, programming QuickTime controls.

Fisher-Price Wild Western Town

In addition to working on the artwork for Western Town (backgrounds and animation masks), I was also asked to run Quality Assurance testing on it. It was during this time that I was offered to transition to programming full-time.

Animaniacs Game Pack

While working as an artist for the company, I was asked to run Quality Assurance testing on the application.

Warner Brothers Quest for Camelot

One of my earlier projects, I served as an inker for animated sequences in the Dragon game.

Jumpstart First Grade

My earliest recollected product. Artwork, and animation.
